What New Montclair NJ Restaurants in Summer 2026 Signal

August 6, 2026

For years, Montclair's food story ran one direction. A chef built a following here, then chased a bigger stage across the Hudson. The summer of 2026 looks different. The Lower East Side closed a five-year-old brunch flagship to move to Orange Road. A Michelin-trained pasta chef from Italy picked a former hardware store on Valley Road for his only U.S. kitchen. An Idaho-born health-bowl chain planted its first New Jersey flag here on the same day. If you already live in Montclair, the practical question isn't whether the scene is changing. It's what to make of the fact that outside operators are treating this town as a destination rather than a stepping stone.

The direction reversed

Look at the marquee openings in a single frame and a pattern emerges. The Lower East Side's Pig & Butter, an all-day brunch spot, is the newest NYC local making the move to Montclair, at 401 Orange Road. Pig & Butter closed its 42 Avenue B location in New York on Sunday, December 7. That isn't an expansion. It's a relocation.

Clementina tells the same story in a different accent. A taste of Italy's Adriatic Coast came to Montclair in June with the opening of Clementina at 627 Valley Road, taking over the former Saunders Hardware space in Upper Montclair after the longtime business closed in 2024. Chef Michele Rocchi uses Metodo Massi, a patented cold-extrusion pasta process from his hometown of Senigallia and available in the United States exclusively at Clementina. Exclusive in the country, in a room on Valley Road. Read that sentence twice.

Valley Road is quietly pulling the center of gravity

The lower stretch of Bloomfield Avenue has been Montclair's dining spine for as long as most residents can remember. This summer's map redraws it. Upper Montclair picked up Clementina at 627 Valley, and Jackie's Grillette expanded into the larger space next door at 612 Valley Road in Upper Montclair, giving the longtime neighborhood favorite more room to serve its customers, while shortening its name to "Jackie's" and continuing to serve wraps, sandwiches, breakfast favorites, and fresh juices. Church Street picked up Oggi Gelato, an Italian gelateria that took over the former Oasis clothing boutique space at 40 Church Street, which closed in December 2025 after 20 years in business, founded by Carmelo Chiaramida and brought to the United States by Maurizio and Graziano Ricci of the Romanacci restaurant group.

Bloomfield Avenue is still adding, but the tone is different up there. OddFellows Ice Cream, Insomnia Cookies, Hummus Republic, and a farm-to-table Italian all landed on Bloomfield this year, with the destination-caliber tasting menus clustering on Valley. If you have out-of-town friends coming for dinner, the pin has moved a mile north.

What the outside operators are bringing

The pedigrees are worth pausing on, because they explain why prices and expectations are being reset in specific rooms.

At Clementina, Chef and co-founder Michele Rocchi leads the kitchen, bringing experience that includes time as head chef for three-star Michelin chef Mauro Uliassi, joined by general manager Alex Cabarcas, formerly of Faubourg, and assistant manager Joanne Berlangieri, formerly of La Rocca Osteria, both longtime figures in the Montclair restaurant scene. That last detail matters. The front of house is Montclair veterans; the kitchen is imported. It is a deliberate blend.

At Pig & Butter, the story is a science lab in disguise. The business is Black woman-owned, founded by Sherry Grimes and Dr. Shavonne Hylton; Sherry is a classically trained French chef and former neuroscientist, and Dr. Hylton is an MIT graduate with a PhD in Exposure Science, and their backgrounds in science were used to craft the bar's cocktails. The brunch mimosa special runs $5 per drink on Saturdays and Sundays until 4 p.m.

Campofiore is the latest venture from Stout NYC Hospitality Group, which also operates Allegory and Splendid Rooftop inside the MC Hotel, and it is a farm-to-table Italian restaurant led by Chef Dan Drohan in the 664 Bloomfield space formerly occupied by Thai Chef. Konala officially expanded to the East Coast with its first New Jersey outpost opening on Friday, July 31, founded in Idaho, with a following for its clean, macro-friendly menu designed for diners looking for convenient high-protein meals. Konala's calculus is telling. A national chain with dozens of markets to choose from picked Montclair for the beachhead.

The tasting-menu bet

Three separate operators are asking Montclair residents to sit down for a fixed multi-course experience this summer and fall. That is unusual density for a town this size, and it is the clearest evidence that the market is being repositioned.

Series Where Format Price
Clementina's Chef's Table 627 Valley Road Private dining for groups of two to five, custom tasting menus with curated wine Custom
Italiana by Zod's Blu Night 558 Bloomfield Avenue Five-course tasting menu of fine-dining dishes not served since Blu closed in 2015, running every Thursday, Friday and Saturday through August with seatings at 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. $95 per person
Sam's Table Former Tasca space Vegetable-forward modern American, menu changing every two weeks, 26 seats, à la carte Thursdays and Sundays, tasting menu Fridays and Saturdays $92 per person

Two of the three come from chefs with deep local roots. Chef Zod Arifai was recognized with a Michelin Star during his tenure at Wicked Jane in Greenwich Village. Sam Stymest has previously worked at restaurants including Craft Bar in NYC and Upstairs, Fascino and Corso 98 in Montclair. A Michelin-decorated chef running a nostalgic tasting series in the room he cooks in every night, priced within a few dollars of the newcomer down the block. That is a competitive market signal, not a coincidence.

What Montclair lost to make room

The churn is real, and honest coverage means naming it. This summer's arrivals sit inside rooms other businesses vacated:

  • Saunders Hardware, on Valley Road for decades, closed in 2024 before Clementina moved in.
  • Oasis, a Church Street clothing boutique, closed in December 2025 after 20 years.
  • Fiamella, on Bloomfield Avenue, is now Italiana by Zod.
  • Thai Chef, at 664 Bloomfield, is now Campofiore.
  • Tasca, which lasted roughly a year, gives way to Sam's Table in early September.
  • DaVinci's pizzeria, in its space for more than 25 years until closure, is being converted for Farmhouse Fried Chicken.
  • Plaza Convenience, at 412 Bloomfield, is now Hummus Republic.

And a retirement worth marking: Natalie Lee, owner and chef of Montclair's Plum Bakery and Mikki & Al's Noshery, announced the closure of both businesses as she retires after 40 years in professional kitchens; she opened the gluten-free bakery in 2015, launched Mikki & Al's Noshery in 2020, and relocated the deli next door to Plum on Glenridge Avenue in 2023. Lee told Montclair Local News that she plans to continue sharing recipes from both ventures through her new online project, Around Natalie's Table. A 40-year career doesn't get replaced by a build-your-own bowl. It gets remembered.

If you haven't caught up yet

A practical plan for the next two weekends, ordered so nothing conflicts with anything else.

Start a Saturday morning at Bagel Supreme Go. The family-owned brand's 13th New Jersey location is now open inside Lackawanna Station, with breakfast sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, waffles, smoothies, and a standout build-your-own cream cheese bar with toppings like Nutella and fresh fruit, gluten-free and vegan bagel options available, located next to BDP just outside The Big Room, and open seven days a week.

Save Saturday night for Italiana by Zod's Blu Night while the series is still running, or book a table at Clementina and share the Tribute to Mozzarella at $23, a combination of burrata cream, mozzarella, pistachios, capers, anchovies, basil and sun-dried tomatoes, fantastic with bread from Montclair's Nicolo's Bakery, and the Maccheroncini al Fumé at $28, tossed in a smoky, creamy sauce with crispy pancetta and scamorza cheese. Sunday brunch belongs to Pig & Butter. Order the Korean Short Ribs of Beef and Grits or the Thai Basil Curry Mushroom Tostada and ride the mimosa deal until four.

For a weekday lunch, Jackie's on Valley Road in its bigger room. For an after-dinner walk, OddFellows on Bloomfield. If you're staying up late, Insomnia Cookies at 332 Bloomfield stays open until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Why this matters beyond dinner

A town's food scene is a real-time index of who is betting on the place. When operators from Manhattan and Idaho and Senigallia all pick Montclair inside a single summer, when Michelin-adjacent kitchens open six-block tasting series against each other, and when a national chain plants its first New Jersey flag here, the signal to a homeowner is straightforward. Outside capital is treating this town as worth its opening move, not its second or third. That doesn't move a specific listing's price. It does change the story a buyer hears before they ever look at a listing.
